Workcation in Denmark – Franziska Schlereth from Ecovis in Schweinfurt, Germany
Franziska Schlereth is a payroll specialist based in the Ecovis office in Schweinfurt. Earlier this year, Franziska did a workcation at the Ecovis office in Ringsted, Denmark, for two months.
What motivated you to choose a workcation?
My main motivation was to live and work in a foreign country. I wanted to experience a different country and culture as well as work culture. And of course also travelling to other countries close by.
It was also important to me to go to an non-German speaking country. So I could practice my language skills, but I was also able to learn a few words of another language.
Did you feel productive during your workcation, ie did you get much work done?
Yes, productivity was no problem for me. I was able to continue my German work as before.
Contact with customers continued by email or telephone to the usual extent, as there was no time difference.
How did you balance work with enjoying time exploring a foreign city?
I had some overtime that I was able to use during my workcation. So, I was able to take many long weekends and use them for short trips around the country but also to neighbouring countries.
I also adapted the working hours from the Ecovis office in Denmark and as they are less than in Germany this helped to maintain a good work-life balance.
What were the highlights of your workcation experience?
For me one of the highlights was my new colleagues. They welcomed me with open arms, and I felt that I was in very good hands.
Another highlight was having German colleagues and friends visit me in Denmark. Together we explored Copenhagen. It is such a great city with many beautiful sights and places to explore.
Any tips for individuals considering a workcation for the first time?
Before doing a workcation I would recommend thinking about what your goals are besides working from a different country. Would you rather live in and explore a big city or live in the countryside and explore the nature of your workcation country? If you want to travel a lot within the country, and also to neighbouring countries, close proximity to an airport or good train connections would be helpful.
In general, being open to other cultures and ways of life, and approaching local people with an open mind, will help to ensure a great workcation experience.
